The Process of Divination

  1. A carefully formulated question is written.
  2. The questioner holds the question in his mind and divides the yarrow stalks in the manner later described.
  3. Numbers derived from the manipulation of the yarrow stalks lead to the formation of a first line, then a second and so on until the six lines of the kua are formed.
  4. A chart at the back of the book shows the page number of the kua.
  5. The kua and all six of its lines are read to gain an understanding of the meaning of the kua.
  6. The lines that were obtained with either the number 6 or the number 9, called "moving lines," are taken into consideration in the answer to the question. The other lines are disregarded.
  7. The lines obtained with a either a 6 or a 9, if any, have so much energy that they are changed to their opposite: divided to undivided, undivided to divided; that changing is not done in the first kua, but in the succeeding kua which is formed of the transformed lines, along with the other lines that were not transformed.
  8. The chart at the back of the book shows the page number for the new kua which is read for the meaning. None of the lines of the new kua are to be taken into consideration in the answer, but they should be read to help perceive the overall meaning of the kua. The second kua shows what the current situation will become.
